Exeter.
Founded in 1821 by James Badgery, who was born in the UK village of the same name, Exeter is one of the smaller and more exclusive villages in the Southern Highlands, with a population of just over 1000. It is rich in history, with buildings such as the heritage listed original railway station dating back to 1891 and the beautiful St Aidan’s Church built in 1895. It’s surrounded by areas of natural beauty, with walking tracks to places such as the stunning Fairy Bower Falls and Bungonia gorge lookout all only a short drive away.
Exeter has maintained a quaint English village feel. The unhurried community life centres around the Village Hall with its adjoining park and oval, and while the leafy streets and local stores have a heritage feel, they definitely cater to modern tastes, with a fabulous cafe, and boutique wineries like St. Maur Wines or Sallys Corner Wines. There’s a bustling General Store and monthly village markets where you can stock up on locally grown produce and locals or visitors can even enjoy a regular game at the lively croquet club in the centre of town.
Exeter has an excellent local public school, with independent schools The Kings School -Tudor House, Chevalier College, Oxley College and Frensham all only a short drive away. Located midway between Sydney and Canberra and just over an hour from the south coast, the area is also well-served with transport, with Exeter station on the Southern Highlands line making it easy to travel in either direction.
