How to add value to your home through storage.

When it comes to selling your home, decluttering and cleaning is usually one of the first steps to preparing your property for sale. But beyond creating a warm and welcoming vibe for your open homes, having smart storage solutions can actually add value to your property.

Here are the top storage solutions you should consider before you put your home on the market.

Built in, or walk in wardrobes storage

Seems like a no-brainer, but built in or walk in wardrobes in bedrooms add a lot of appeal to buyers and renters alike, so if you don’t currently have built in wardrobes in your home, it’s worth considering having them installed before looking to sell.

“Built in and walk in wardrobes are highly sought after in property because not only do they make life easier for the buyer if they plan on living in the property, but they also make the property more appealing to renters if the buyer wants to use it as an investment,” says Nick Boyd, Head of Growth, Belle Property.

Wall shelving storage

Not only does it look great, but wall shelving is highly functional, providing ways to hide clutter in plain sight.

“Wall storage, like floating shelves in living spaces, kitchens, bathrooms or bedrooms is great because it looks stylish, so it adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the house, but it’s also very easy to install. If you don’t already have a few floating shelves around, you can easily put them up in time for your sale period,” says Nick.

Plenty of kitchen cabinetry

As the saying goes, the kitchen is the heart of the home – and where storage solutions are even more important. If your kitchen doesn’t currently have a good selection of cabinetry, including a larger space for a pantry, then it could be worth investing in a kitchen makeover.

“A new kitchen that has good, clean storage at its heart can add significantly to your price on sale day. In the age of Marie Kondo, buyers are hyper-aware of storage, especially in the kitchen, so if you’re investing anywhere, invest there first,” says Nick.

Smart styling doubling as storage

Another way to add value to your home is through smart styling of your spaces and investing in clever pieces that can double as storage items. For example, decorative baskets can be used to store blankets, pillows, or even toys around the house and still look appealing to buyers.

“Also think about furniture that has storage components. Like ottomans with lids, or a coffee table with drawers. These pieces look great in your home and show buyers how they could style the space in a functional way,” says Nick.
